How I learned...

How has it been over a year since I ran the Bellingham Bay Marathon? Last year, September 27th was a monumental day for me. I tracked  my experiences throughout training on this blog, as many of you painfully remember. To be honest, it's easy to write about because I always found a story from a run or else I had plenty of time to think while running those seventeen milers. Everyone has their courageous goals. Some people make a point to go bungee jumping or skydiving before they die. I do not have any desire to those things, but I find them to be incredible and brave in their own nature. The marathon was my skydiving. This brings me to my main point: How I learned to love running.

I didn't give myself much choice. I thought a half-marathon was a good start without being in cross country or on the track team. Dream big, right? With a training plan that was organized for me and a daily run to accomplish, I was not extremely scared. I looked forward to a run, but I also enjoyed checking the run off my list after it was completed. Satisfaction, mostly.

Paying for a race before you start the training is incentive to get your money's worth. Quitting never crossed my mind for the half-marathon. I signed up, paid, and was ready to work. It was in that training I learned the work wasn't only work. It made me feel good and I discovered taking that time by myself to run, get out, and clear my head was the best remedy for day-to-day life.

It wasn't just the lengthier runs that made me feel happier. Even if I ran three miles, I'd be in a good mood. There is nothing like stepping into your doorway knowing you pushed yourself to move your feet a little. Sure, there were times when sitting on the couch or napping sounded infinitely better than running for awhile but it's known that the hardest step is the step out the door. It couldn't be more true. If that's the hardest step, at least it's over before the run begins!

I surprised myself and found ambitions I never knew I had growing up. I suppose that's why it's called "growing up". When I signed up for the marathon in Bellingham, I had not even completed the half! Uh-oh! I learned that it didn't matter what happened in the half marathon because it was already set in my mind to run a full marathon. Great. Since when did I start thinking this way? It's like signing up for grad school before going to college. Who does that? (okay maybe not totally the same, but that's just what came to my mind)

I formed a love/hate relationship for the hills in Bellingham. I knew they'd push me to work harder but sometimes I just wanted to cry looking in front of me. Even still, the four months of training allowed me to see that running can be challenging and painful (feeling sore) but the rewards will always outweigh those challenges. Besides, why would it be fun if it was simple and boring?

My marathon post sums up my exact thoughts that day.
This winter I had to make a video about myself. This is what I chose to do.

If you take a day off or a month off, running comes back to you so easily which is why I love it. I learned to love hearing my breath as I chugged along. I learned to love capturing all aspects of the settings I run through. I learned to love the convenience of running at any time in the year (layers, people). I learned to love the time I could allow my mind to wander. I learned to love that hard work does in fact produce results. I learned to love finding the perfect routes to take. I learned to love not finding a route and ending up wherever I pleased. I learned to love that running is timeless. I learned to love talking to others about running and being inspired by the pros. I learned to love running for good, clean (unless it's raining) fun. I learned to love that I found something to love.

The summer is coming to an end.

Summer is over. What better day to start school than on the first official day of Fall!? Before I drown in books and readings and research and stress, I thought I'd talk about some highlights of the summer. Despite being a student non-stop until August, I managed to have some great moments.
In June I went to my first Seattle Mariners game! It was a blast! Night games are so much fun. Safeco Field was definitely worth the trip!
I went home for a very short weekend. I was able to see some of my closest friends. How very lucky of me.
The reason for my trip home was to get this beautiful sister of mine a wedding dress. We succeeded. She is going to be a gorgeous bride.
July presented me with a trip to Portland with friends and we rode a fancy red tandem bike. Portland is so...cute.
I dabbled in a food blog! I loved every moment of it and will without a doubt start it up again....someday.

In August, I ventured to Mt. Rainier. Holy views!
I also moved into a house.
Goodbye one bedroom apartment!
September allowed me to see my family and friends. Of course, Sammy was in on the action.
Briana and I.
I'm really enjoying this company.
And here are some pictures from my last day of summer:

Cheers to a new year!

What I'm loving today...

This post is certainly inspired by a post I saw on How Sweet It Is blog. I am loving a lot of things today so I thought I'd transfer my love over to the blog.
I have constantly been hearing about this book and decided enough was enough. I picked it up and can't stop reading it! It's told from the dog's point of view. So far, so good! I'll keep you posted on this one. Bonus: It takes place in Seattle. Therefore, it must be brilliant :-D

Have you ever had Popchips? Holy yum! They are popped potato chips but totally natural, not fried or baked, and gluten free. Contrary to what you think, they taste fantastic! I have only tried the original flavor but there are more. Just try them for yourself. You don't have to feel so guilty. Plus, I don't judge.
So maybe I've had my sister's save the date for a few days but I'm particularly loving it today. It makes me so terribly happy when I am reminded of the big day each time I go to the refrigerator. Looking sharp guys!
Even though I had to purchase school books today, I was given a nice tote to carry them....for free! (well, I guess it's thrown in when you spend several hundred dollars on books...so, basically, Western owed it to us)
Who doesn't enjoy a good organizer? I would be a mess if I didn't write things down. We can debate how much of a mess I am even when I write things down but just think about if I didn't write anything down! The horror!

And of course, I'm still loving pictures. It never gets old.

Playing Catch-Up

I've been in Bellingham for a good four days now. I've certainly been enjoying it so far. Even though the weather has consistently looked like the photo below.

The sky has consistently looked like this but I'm surprisingly enjoying it. Cool breezes and perfect running weather if I do say so myself.
My room is sort of...a war zone. Such a disaster. I clean for awhile but it just seems to stay messy. It has to get dirty before it gets clean, right? Right.
I'm tackling this pile today. It's worse than it looks.
This is my lovely roommate Briana. We've been working on getting our house into a presentable state. It's getting there.
T
We discovered our roommate Jillian brought some jacks with her. Um, yes please!
Me, Brianna, Camille, and Jillian. *missing Annie

In true Bellingham fashion (no pun intended), you take pictures all dressed up to get dinner and everyone has their raincoat on.

All in all, things are being pieced together and school will be here in no time. I have a to-do list five feet tall but I am certainly looking forward to a few things this coming week:

Steelers game today
The start of all my favorite tv shows
Seeing my Community Health girls
The first week of school (just the first week)
Spending time with my roommates
Running the Bellingham Bay 5-K. (so it's not the marathon, but I'm still excited!)

Have a wonderful Sunday. Until we meet again...

Au Revoir!

This has been an absolutely wonderful visit at home. I have enjoyed my stay so very much. After a long summer of school and stress, I can't say there is anything better than finding myself in the company of my family and friends. Three weeks is a long time but it allowed me to take care of all the activities I had been so excited for, and of course I relaxed.

I got to play with Sammy.

I baked...a lot.

I stalked hung out with my sister, Meliss.

So now it's time to head back to one of my favorite places: Bellingham. It is the reason this blog started, anyway. That's gotta say something. I'm all packed and I have my raincoat in a handy spot in my suitcase. I'm preparing for the clouds and rain but to be honest, I'm okay with it. It's time to get a move on.
Sorry this is so quick but I have to figure out how to zip up my suitcase.
We'll catch up in Bellingham.
Au revoir, Crystal Lake.

Great Saturday

It's a great Saturday. Don't you agree? I mean, first of all, there have been some great tennis matches. Currently rooting for Novak Djokovic because I'd like to see him beat Roger Federer. I suppose it doesn't matter much because Rafael Nadal is ready to win the whole tournament. That's just the way it has to be. I'm sad the U.S. Open is coming to an end though. The good news is that there will be plenty of college football and NFL to keep me occupied. We've already discussed that....moving on...
Let's go WWU Vikings! No? Oh...oops

Want to know the best-o pesto recipe? Okay fine. I'll tell you. Step by step, picture by picture. You're gonna love the way it looks (and tastes). The Men's Warehouse guy guarantees it

Looking good team.

Before we go any further, you should be warned that pine nuts are pricey. You'll pay $8.40 for 0.40 lbs. You need to get over this now because it's worth it. Don't doubt.

The belle of the ball. The star of the show. The head honcho. Is that enough?

Grab a food processor and put in 1 Tbsp of garlic (4 cloves). All of those pine nuts (1 cup). 2 cups of the finest smelling, tasting basil you can find.
Start processing!
Add 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil.

So far so good.

Grind up some black pepper. Just as much as you'd like. Toss in some cheese! 1 cup Parmesan and 1/4 cup of Romano.

Oh hey, we're done! How easy was that?

The most important part...

Taste test! This step must be included since it's the most fun important.

If you were wondering what to make for dinner...errr...you're welcome.

I'm off to enjoy the rest of my Saturday! Please do the same.

              Best-o,
                        Anne
